Autodesk Flow Studio MCP Server

The Autodesk Flow Studio MCP Server is a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that connects your AI assistant to your Flow Studio account. From a chat, you can create images and 3D models, refine them, find your work in your library, and download the files.

At a glance

  • Best for: Creating and refining images and 3D models from a text prompt or an image without leaving your chat.
  • Connection type: Remote server over Streamable HTTP. You sign in with your Autodesk account.
  • Access: Reads your Flow Studio projects, generations, licences, and AI model settings. Creates, refines, and deletes generations, and saves your default AI models.
  • Availability: Flow Studio Education, Lite, Standard, Pro, and Enterprise licences.
  • Supported AI clients: AI clients that support remote MCP servers, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor.

Requirements

  • An Autodesk account.
  • A Flow Studio Education, Lite, Standard, Pro, or Enterprise licence. A Flow Studio Free plan cannot use the server.
  • Credits on your licence to create or refine images and models.
  • Age consent confirmed in Flow Studio, if you have an Education licence.
  • An AI client that can connect to a remote MCP server.

How it works

  • Scope: The server acts as you, on your own Flow Studio account. It only sees your projects, generations, licences, and settings.
  • Tools: 19 tools in five groups:
    • Generate (3): Starts new images and 3D models.
    • Refine (5): Changes an existing image or model.
    • Library (6): Finds, follows, downloads, and deletes your work.
    • AI models (3): Shows and saves the models you use.
    • Licence and credits (2): Shows your plan and checks that you can generate.
  • Credits: Generate and Refine tools spend credits from your licence. The other tools do not.
  • Previews: AI clients that support MCP Apps show progress, results, and 3D previews in the chat. Other clients show text and links.

Connect to ChatGPT

Connect Flow Studio to ChatGPT once. After that, you can use Flow Studio in any chat.

Add the server

  1. In ChatGPT, open Plugins, choose Add, and then Add custom MCP server.
  2. Fill in the form:
    • Name: Flowstudio (one word; this is the name you mention in chats).
    • Server URL: https://developer.api.autodesk.com/flowstudio/mcp
    • Authentication: OAuth.
    • Check I understand and want to continue.
  3. Choose Create as a plugin.

Sign in and verify

  1. Sign in with your Autodesk account and choose Allow.
  2. Start a new chat and mention @Flowstudio in your first message.
  1. Ask a simple question about your account:
“@Flowstudio Which plan am I on, and how many credits do I have left?”

A successful connection returns your Flow Studio plan and the credits you have left.

Note: In other AI clients, add a remote MCP server with the same server URL and sign in with your Autodesk account when the client asks.

Common scenarios

Create an image

“Create an image of a weathered bronze dragon statue.”

What happens:

  • The assistant checks your licence with check_generation_access_billing.
  • It creates the images with create_image_from_text_mesh in a new Flow Studio mesh project.
  • It follows progress with get_generation_mesh until the images are ready.

Create a 3D model from text or an image

“Make a 3D model of a low-poly treasure chest.”

What happens:

  • The assistant checks your licence with check_generation_access_billing.
  • It starts the draft with create_3d_model_from_text_mesh, or with create_3d_model_from_image_mesh when you attach an image.
  • It follows progress with get_generation_mesh until the draft variants are ready.
  • It calls get_generation_next_step_options_mesh and offers the next steps.

Remesh and texture a model

“Remesh my treasure chest draft to 20,000 triangles and texture it as old wood.”

What happens:

  • The assistant finds the draft with list_projects_mesh and list_project_generations_mesh.
  • It calls remesh_and_retexture_draft_mesh for a draft, or remesh_finished_model_mesh and retexture_finished_model_mesh for a finished model.
  • It follows progress with get_generation_mesh until the model is finished.

Find and download your work

“Find my treasure chest model and give me a download link.”

What happens:

  • The assistant finds the generation with list_projects_mesh and list_project_generations_mesh.
  • It calls get_generation_download_link_mesh and returns a download link that expires after 5 minutes.

Check your plan and credits

“Which plan am I on, and how many credits do I have left?”

What happens:

  • The assistant calls list_licenses_billing and lists your plan and remaining credits.

AI-generated responses

Images and 3D models come from AI models, and results can differ between runs of the same prompt. Review each result before you use it in your work. Creating or refining a result spends credits, and deleting a generation cannot be undone, so check what the assistant is about to do before you confirm it.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to do
ChatGPT does not use Flow StudioMention @Flowstudio in your message. After the first Flow Studio step, ChatGPT keeps using it in that chat.
The assistant asks you to sign in againYour session has expired. Reconnect the server in your AI client and sign in with your Autodesk account.
The assistant says you need a licenceYou have no Flow Studio licence or a Free plan. Choose Upgrade on the card in the chat, finish the checkout, then ask the assistant to check your access again.
The assistant says age consent is requiredConfirm your age in Flow Studio, then ask the assistant to check your access again.
A generation fails for lack of creditsAsk “How many credits do I have left?” and add credits or pick a cheaper AI model.
A result is not ready yet3D generations can take a few minutes. Ask the assistant for the status of the generation.
A tool is not listed in your AI clientReconnect the server so the client loads the current tool list.
